The city is bisected by Sligo Creek, a free-flowing tributary of the Anacostia River. Roughly 9 miles long, this area is a hotspot for fisherman and other recreational activities. The Sligo Creek Trail, a hiker and biker trail, runs along the creek as does the Anacostia Tributary Trail System. Takoma Piney Branch Local Park is a wonderful park in the city. This 17-acre neighborhood green space has plenty of sport courts, fields, a skate park, playgrounds and more. Silver Spring Intermediate Park is shared with the city’s neighbor and is a 4-acre park with tennis courts, multi-use fields, a playground and peaceful green spaces.
Traveling Around Takoma Park
The city of Takoma Park is about a five-minute walk from the Takoma Metro station in Washington, DC, which runs on the Red line. The Silver Spring station is co-located with a MARC commuter rail station. All stations and surrounding neighborhoods can be reached by both the Metrobus and Ride On bus lines. The nominal location of the city is situated at the crossroads of Route 195 and Route 410. Route 29 is a major north-south road in the area and connects residents with the nation’s capital.
