Gaithersburg is roughly belted by Darnestown Road to the south, Shady Grove Road to the east, Route 124 to the north, and Longdraft Road to the west. Montgomery Village borders the city to the north, Washington Grove, Derwood, and later Redland to the east, North Potomac to the south, and Germantown to the northwest. Rockville and DC are also a short drive away.

Things to Do in Gaithersburg

This lakefront mall features plenty of stores, restaurants, a movie theater, paddle boats and a walking trail. Some dining options at this center are California Pizza Kitchen, Uncle Julio’s and Copper Canyon Grill—a casual, family-friendly American chain restaurant known for its rotisserie chicken.
There are three great establishments for the family spattered around the city: Chuck E. Cheese’s, located on Frederick Avenue, offers arcade games, pizza parties, play zones and more. The second spot is ShadowLand Laser Adventures. Just down the street, this indoor laser tag amusement center features a multilevel landscape of mist, music, and colored lights. City of Gaithersburg Water Park at Bohrer Park features swimming pools with deep lanes, a shallow play area and a 250-ft. double waterslide.
Seneca Creek State Park is a state-owned, public recreation area encompassing around 6,000 acres. Located just on the outskirts of the city’s boundaries, this park has a devoted section for Clopper Lake. Boating and fishing are popular activities at this lake. The park also contains over 50 miles of trails that are variously used for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and skiing. Sections of Seneca Creek can be traveled by kayak, while there are also picnicking facilities, a tire playground, 27-hole golf course, and more. One of the park’s historic landmarks is the Black Rock Mill with interpretive exhibits featuring a history of area floods. The film, The Blair Witch Project was also partially filmed at this park and thus attracts tourists.
Traveling Around Gaithersburg
The spine of the city is Frederick Avenue, which runs north-south through the middle of the city and connects the area with Frederick, Rockville, and Washington, DC. Diamond Avenue and Quince Orchard Road are other important non-highway routes. I-270 and I-370 are also accessible roads in the city, with the latter a direct link to I-95. Maryland’s MARC system operates commuter rail services connecting the city to Washington, DC. There is a station in Old Town Gaithersburg, Metropolitan Grove, and Washington Grove, which is just outside city limits.
